Social Experiments

SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS: Read and Listen to Audio Post BelowI signed onto the National Do Not Call Registry as soon as the ink dried on the legislation. I still receive hundreds of calls. Some have changed their tactics; others are just obstinate. My tactics have also changed, and I too am obstinate. These dinnertime sabatouers say they are not soliciting me; they are merely informing me. I decided to see how informed these "Informers " really are. I devised a series of five questions and went down to my neighborhood Radio Shack and bought some phone tapping paraphernalia. I begin the call by telling them that our conversation is being taped to be used for my own purposes, and do they wish to continue? The answer is always YES. I can't knock them for that though, it shows that they want to make the sale. Step 2. I explain the rules to them. For every question they get correct, I will listen to more of their speil. If they answer all five questions correctly: I WILL BUY WHATEVER IT IS THEY'RE SELLING! I don't care if it's a Cadillac, lawn gnomes, fire insurance, or a subscription to the Wall Street Journal; I'll buy it. Do you wish to continue? The answer is always, YES.Hey, sales department! Rule number 2 of good salesmanship: Never let the customer manipulate the call. Rule number 1: ABC-Always Be Closing. How are your salespeople closing deals when I'm in charge of the phone call? Watch Glenngarry Glenn Ross, and then call me.When I said I devised a series of five questions, I really only developed one. I only need one; because nobody, not even the solicitor trying to sell me the Wall Street Journal has ever gone beyond question one. Question one is easy and question one is always the same: " Who is the Vice President of the United States? " (Answer: Dick Cheney)Now, I like the Wall Street Journal, it's one of my favorite papers and I read it three times daily as research for the Action Report; and if the person who worked at the firm that the WSJ hired to handle their over the phone sales had, as my Sister in-law suggested, " just glimpsed at the front page of the very paper she's trying to sell me," she may have progressed to the next phase of my twisted inquisition. Had she read the paper consistently she could have easily breezed through all 5 tiers, made a tidy commission for hersef, positioned her name on the Monthly Sales Leader Board which would have made her eligible for that FREE trip to Aruba she's been pining for; or better yet; a shot at Tony Roma's Cadillac. This guy called and then hung up after question 1. I get alot of that. The exception to this call is that he looked up the answer and then called back. Not only did he call back, but he referred to me as Mr. Brown; another brilliant sales tactic. Secondly, you can hear people in the background coaching him; and he is the first solicitor to go beyond question 2. The normal rules no longer applied to our conversation because he was being coached, but the nice guy in me decided to give him a shot at his sales pitch. Ironically (as previously posted in my introduction) He said he wasn't selling anything. He was informing me. Listen below and decide; who's informing who? Click on comments with your answers.
